Welcome to the world of Science Photography

Science has and is impacting us, our times and our world in a way that is so obvious that we hardly take a note of it conciously. Look around you, wherever you are, and try to name one thing that has not been touched by science or its half sister; technology. If it is an event, a phenomenon or a process, natural or manmade, the probability is high that science can explain it in its natural context. No gods in heaven, no ghosts in machines and no supernatural appeals imapact these. If it is a man made object that you are looking at it has certainly been shaped by science, one way or the other. So if you are a photographer - an amateur or a professional - look through your eyepiece at the world around you, choose a subject in your opinion would make a great photograph and at the same time would bring an interesting scientific insight to the viewers, capture it and send us the image along with a short writeup about its scientific context.

If you are a professional already practicing scientific photography using standard technique or special photo techniques like photo Aerial Photography, Computed Tomography (CT Scans), Endoscopy, High Speed Photography, Light Microscopy (LM), Megnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Molecular Models, Radionuclide Scanning (Gamma Scanning), Satellite Images, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Space Photography, Thermography, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Ultrasound Images, Ultraviolet Photography, X-rays etc., send us a picture that you think is really amazing along with a short note saying what it shows scientifically and how was it taken.

The following pages give some interesting examples of images from our previous context.
Welcome to Lights and Shades of Science; welcome to the world of science photography.

The competition is composed of five categories, namely:

1. Science in Action
2. Science Close-Up
3. Science as Art
4. Concepts
5. Science and Society
  • A participant can send entries in all the categories. A maximum of five images can be entered in one category.

  • One image can be entered in one category only and the same image cannot be sent in any other category.

  • Detach the entry form from the brochure or download it from www.lightsandshadesofscience.com. Entry forms can also be photocopied.

  • A separate entry form has to be sent for each image.

  • Study the rules of the competition carefully before filling the entry form.

  • Use a blue or a black ball pen and write in clear hand writing using block letters (capital letters) or type on a computer.

  • In case you have to provide additional information in the context of your image or you find the space in the entry form restricted, you can use plain A4 sheets along with the entry form. On the back of these extra sheets write your name and address, title of the images and category & staple them with the entry form.

  • If you are sending prints, then at the back of each print the title of the image, category, your name and address should be written clearly.

  • The orientation of the image should be clearly indicated at the back of each print with the help of an arrow indicating the top end of the image.

  • In case you are sending the soft copies, then the CDs or DVDs should be clearly labeled. The title/s of the images, their category, your name and address should be clearly written with a CD marker.

  • While packaging, care should be taken to see that the prints are not folded. It is advised that the prints should be enclosed on both sides by cardboards of sufficient size and only then should they be put in a thick envelope or prints should be rolled and put in a thick cardboard cylinder.

  • CDS and DVDs should first be put in hard covers. These should then be enclosed in a packaging material normally used for fragile materials like bubble wraps or thermocoal boxes and only then they should be put in a thick envelope.
